Training/Mentoring

RoSPA NZ training uses the Police "Roadcraft" system of motorcycle control, a proven system developed over many years.

Mentoring is free to members of the group and is provided by one of the group's qualified Advanced Riding Tutors. Every member is assigned one of the group's tutors for one-to-one tuition at mutually convenient times.

All of our Tutors are volunteers and experienced bikers with a passion for motorcycling, road safety and helping others to improve their riding. Our Tutors hold either a Silver or Gold grade RoSPA Advanced Motorcycle certificate.

After a small number of lessons you should feel more confident on your machine, with the development of improved riding skills. You will have as many sessions as you need (our Tutors need only the smallest reason to go for a spin!) until you reach a level that enables you to approach the RoSPA Advanced Motorcycle test with confidence. You will feel much more confident about your riding skills and will be much less likely to have an accident. Skills covered include hazard awareness, 360 degree vision, positioning and motorcycle control. You will be followed on your motorbike by a tutor on their own motorcycle. You will stop from time to time to discuss what has happened and how you can improve your riding. All mentoring lessons are free to members.

All our trainers are volunteers and receive no reimbursement of costs, such as petrol, from the group. So if you feel it appropriate to make a contribution to the trainers' fuel costs or buy breakfast or coffee, please feel free. Please remember that they are giving their own time, using their own motorcycle and fuel, freely to guide you through to your test.

Taking the RoSPA Advanced Riding Test

The RoSPA Advanced Riding Test is regarded as the most comprehensive and challenging available to the public. Testing standards are monitored and approved by the Driving Standards Agency in the UK.

There are a number of steps to taking the test are:

  1. Get Informed - the first thing to do is read the information on the RoSPA UK website by clicking the link on our “useful information“ page.
  2. Read "Motorcycle roadcraft: the police rider's handbook" - this is a great read for anyone interested in improving their riding skills. Use the link on our “useful information” page. Compulsory for anyone hoping to do the Advanced Riding Test!!!
  3. Join a RoSPA Group such as ourselves - Joining will give you the opportunity to get some free tuition in riding technique, and also ride with motorcyclists who have already taken the test. (Annual Membership Fee for RoSPA NZ - $50)
  4. Apply for the Test - apply for an initial test with RoSPA NZ by contacting us to apply for membership. We will then provide you with a test application form and information to guide you through the process. (Current test cost - $115).
  5. Take the Test! - a number of weeks (or sometimes months) after you have applied, an examiner from RoSPA NZ will contact you to arrange a time and place for the test. The test itself lasts around 90 minutes. RoSPA NZ  recognises that maintaining a high standard of "Roadcraft" is an ongoing and perishable skill so accreditation at a particular level is not for "lifetime" but requires refreshing on an ongoing basis, which varies according to the RoSPA pass standard achieved, with Gold being the highest level and hence requiring annual reassessment.
